Colorado What To Do›Editorial Standards
How We Research
The rules we follow when we describe a place, a permit system or a season, and what happens when we get something wrong.
Starting point
We Begin With Whoever Sets The Rule
When a guide on this site says a place needs a reservation, closes for winter or charges a fee, that statement should trace back to the organization that controls it. In practice that means:
- Land managers for parks, forests and trails: the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and city and county open space departments such as Denver Mountain Parks.
- Road authorities for passes, closures and winter driving: the Colorado Department of Transportation and its COtrip service.
- Operators for railroads, hot springs, ski areas and attractions, using their own websites.
- Visitor bureaus and established news outlets for local context, clearly cited.
Every guide lists its sources at the bottom, and important facts link to them directly.
Checks
How We Keep Pages Current
- Rules over rumors. Reservation systems, fees and season dates are checked against the managing agency or operator before a page is updated.
- Ranges, not false precision. Drive times and seasons are given as approximate ranges, because mountain weather and traffic change them.
- No unverified specifics. If we cannot confirm a price, an opening hour or a phone number, we leave it out and point you to the official source.
- Dated updates. Each guide shows when it was last reviewed.
Lines we do not cross
What We Will Not Publish
- Sponsored content presented as editorial. Listings are chosen by our editors; any sponsored placement is labelled.
- Invented reviews, star ratings or claims that we visited somewhere when we did not.
- Advice that contradicts official safety guidance on wildlife, avalanches, fire restrictions or altitude.
Advertising is served by Google AdSense, appears separately from editorial content and does not affect what we write.
